Budapest’s Vision Zero Project Aims to Reduce Fatal Traffic Accidents
The Center for Budapest Transport (BKK) has unveiled its ambitious “Vision Zero” project with the goal of cutting the number of fatal traffic accidents by 50% by 2030, and ultimately eliminating them entirely by 2050. In a bid to achieve this, BKK has turned to its own AI-based software, capable of predicting with an accuracy exceeding 90% the likelihood of accidents on specific road segments, as reported by Index.
Ádám Bodor, Director of Mobility Development at BKK, highlighted that Mayor Gergely Karácsony’s objective is to completely eradicate fatal and serious accidents from Budapest’s roads. Key elements of the road safety strategy center around lowering vehicle speeds, with speed control in urban areas serving as a crucial tactic to achieve this mission. By 2030, the plan lays out the necessary speed limits on major roads within the capital.
BKK has meticulously categorized Budapest’s road network based on their public usage, identifying areas where both vehicle and pedestrian traffic is heavy, thus making them prone to accidents. Through their AI model, BKK’s data analysts pinpointed specific road sections where fatal and serious accidents could be averted by enforcing lower speed limits. Consequently, speed limits in certain areas will be reduced from 50 km/h down to 40 km/h to enhance pedestrian safety.
Drawing inspiration from London, where a similar approach has been successful, Budapest aims to replicate the improvements. London’s reduced speed limits resulted in a 46% drop in road fatalities and a 25% decrease in serious and minor injuries. The initiative has already seen success in Budapest, with accident rates plummeting by over half on Attila Street following speed reductions.
Further speed reductions will be implemented on other high-traffic routes this fall, setting uniform speed limits across these stretches. BKK’s specialists are aided by their AI tool, which predicts accident likelihoods with over 90% accuracy. By analyzing data dating back to 2019, the system guides the prioritization of road alterations for the project’s execution until 2030.
Through a data-driven approach, Budapest is paving the way for safer roads and a significant reduction in traffic accidents. As the Vision Zero initiative gains momentum, BKK is leveraging technology and analysis to shape a future with zero road fatalities in sight.
