Flight Suspension Continues Amid Security Concerns in Israel
In a developing situation regarding air travel to Israel, several airlines have extended their suspension of flights due to heightened security risks. According to the Israeli-based website Calcalist, carriers from the Lufthansa Group—including Eurowings, Swiss International Air Lines, Austrian Airlines, and Brussels Airlines—have updated their suspension dates for flights to Tel Aviv, now pushing the halt until May 11.
Other airlines have also aligned with this measure. ITA, the Italian airline, confirmed that its flight suspension has been extended until May 11. United Airlines, an American carrier, announced an extension until May 9, while Wizz Air from Hungary has pushed its suspension to May 8. European airlines such as Aegean Airlines (Greece), British Airways (UK), Delta Air Lines (USA), and Ryanair (Ireland) have all extended their bans on flights to Israel until May 6.
This suspension has stranded thousands of Israeli citizens abroad, as reported by Yedioth Ahronot, highlighting the chaos that has ensued from the recent security incidents.
The situation escalated on May 4, when the Houthi rebels in Yemen launched a ballistic missile that struck Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The attack severely impacted air traffic, leading to immediate suspension of all landings and departures. A substantial crater, approximately 15 meters deep, was formed at the site of the missile strike, further complicating the area’s operations.
In response to the attack, the Houthis declared a comprehensive air blockade against Israel and urged international airlines to cease their flights to the country. Following these developments, on May 5, Israel retaliated by targeting the Hudeyde Port and a cement factory in Yemen. Reports indicate that these Israeli strikes resulted in casualties, with at least two deaths and 42 injuries among the Yemeni population.
The ongoing conflict has raised significant concerns for travelers and citizens impacted by these flight restrictions, as airlines prioritize safety amidst growing tensions.
