Al-Ain ACMG UAE Claims Victory at FIDE World Rapid Championship in Astana
After three days and 12 rounds, the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships 2024 in Astana concluded with Al-Ain ACMG UAE emerging as the champions. The team secured victory with an impressive 21 match points out of a possible 23, drawing three and winning nine rapid games.
Russian chess grandmaster Daniil Dubov played a crucial role in Al Ain’s triumph, securing redemption in the final round. Decade China, led by World Champion Ding Liren, took second place, while WR Chess, last year’s winners, settled for the bronze. Along with the title, Al-Ain ACMG UAE also claimed the first prize of 100,000 Euros.
Despite featuring world number one Magnus Carlsen and two-time world champion challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi, WR Chess finished third with 19 match points. Consecutive defeats early on hindered their progress, and they were unable to secure a higher ranking in the competition. Other top teams included Chessy and Team MGD1.
Key players for the UAE team included Parham Maghsoodloo, Vladislav Artemiev, and Dmitry Andreikin, who all delivered strong performances throughout the championship. The team also featured young talents like Volodar Murzin and female players Kateryna Lagno and Jiner Zhu.
Reflecting on their victory, Maghsoodloo expressed pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing their motivation and support for each other. Dubov highlighted the satisfaction of defeating strong teams like WR Chess, led by top players like Magnus Carlsen.
Local teams from Kazakhstan also participated in the championship, with Kazakhstan securing the tenth spot. The event in Astana will also include a World Blitz Team Championship, providing more opportunities for teams to showcase their skills and compete for a prize fund of 100,000 Euros.
