Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Celebrates 90th Anniversary
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) recently marked its 90th anniversary with a celebration ceremony on Jan. 15, where research professors and government officials gathered to review the university’s achievements and discuss new opportunities in education. The event was organized by the Kazakh Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
The university, which was established in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in 1934 with just two faculties and 54 students, has since grown significantly. Today, it offers 16 programs and educates over 25,000 students. KazNU has also established partnerships with more than 650 foreign universities and research centers and currently hosts 3,928 international students from 54 countries.
In addition to its main campus in Almaty, KazNU has also expanded its presence by opening branches in Istanbul, Bishkek, and Russia’s National Research Nuclear University MEPhI.
During the celebration, Almaty Mayor Yerbolat Dossayev highlighted KazNU’s international recognition, ranking 207th among the 800 best universities worldwide and being among the top 30 universities in Asia according to the QS World and Asia University Rankings, respectively. KazNU was also the first university in Kazakhstan to receive an international mark of excellence for its educational services, scientific activities, and academic reputation.
KazNU Rector Zhanseit Tuimebayev emphasized the university’s commitment to training technologists and operators of electrochemical production, as well as its plans to establish partnerships with Chinese business representatives and launch a support center for new robotics startups.
The university continues to lead the Global Hub of the United Nations Academic Impact Program (UNAI). It also recently received the status of a research university, with its research revenues doubling over the past three years and significant funding received for environmental conservation and sustainability projects.
Supported by the government, KazNU is currently undertaking a construction project to build new dormitories for 3,180 people and sports and wellness centers as part of its expansion plans for the 2024-2027 period.
Over the past nine decades, KazNU has evolved into a leading institution for higher education and research in Kazakhstan and the region, playing a crucial role in shaping the academic landscape and contributing to sustainable development efforts.
