Azerbaijani President Aliyev Approves Membership in D-8 Organization

Azerbaijani President Aliyev has officially approved Azerbaijan’s membership in the D-8 Organization, according to a recent statement from the Azerbaijani Presidency. This decision comes after Azerbaijan was unanimously accepted as a member of the D-8 Organization at the 11th Summit Meeting held in Cairo, Egypt on December 19, 2024.

The D-8 Organization, also known as the Developing 8, was established in Istanbul on June 15, 1997. Along with Turkey, the organization consists of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and now Azerbaijan, with its secretariat located in Istanbul.

The D-8 countries, which are also members of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC), have a combined population of approximately 1.2 billion. With a foreign trade volume exceeding $2.3 trillion, the D-8 countries account for about 5 percent of global trade.

The main objectives of the D-8 Organization include enhancing the economic development of its member countries, diversifying commercial relations, creating new trade opportunities, and strengthening their presence in international decision-making processes.

The organization is guided by principles such as democracy, peace, dialogue, cooperation, justice, and equality. Its main focus areas include trade, agriculture, food safety, industry, energy, transportation, health, and tourism.

With Azerbaijan’s membership now officially approved by President Aliyev, the country is set to actively contribute to the D-8 Organization’s efforts towards economic development and collaboration among member countries in various sectors.
