Almaty Airport Prepares for 14 Million Annual Passengers

Almaty International Airport to Increase Passenger Traffic to 14 Million with New Terminal

Astana – The Almaty International Airport is set to see a significant increase in passenger traffic once it launches its new terminal in June, with an expected capacity of 14 million people per year. This update comes from a report by the Almaty akimat (city administration) press service on Feb. 15.

The new terminal, currently under construction, is an investment project worth over $200 million, implemented by Turkish company TAV Airports Holding. During a recent visit to the construction site, Akim (Mayor) of Almaty Yerbolat Dossayev inspected the progress of the terminal, which is currently 87% complete.

Once completed, the new international terminal building will be connected to the existing terminal through an overpass, allowing for seamless transfers between domestic and international flights without having to leave the building. This modernization will significantly enhance the airport’s ability to handle the increasing volume of passengers.

The new terminal’s completion is seen as a critical factor in developing inbound tourism, with the renovated airport expected to serve up to 14 million passengers annually. In 2023, the airport served 9.5 million people with a capacity of 2.7 million, and the expected influx of foreign tourists is projected to increase to 520,000 this year and 1 million by 2030.

Quality control of construction materials at the site is based on the standards set by TAV Airports Holding, known for its successful projects at Antalya, Tunisia, Ankara, Skopje, Zagreb, and other airports. Alp Er Tunga Ersoy, the President of Almaty International Airport, stated that the new terminal is on track for completion in June.

The new terminal is expected to not only enhance the travel experience for passengers but also significantly contribute to the growth of inbound tourism in Kazakhstan. With its strategic location and increased capacity, the Almaty International Airport is poised to play a pivotal role in the country’s aviation industry.
