Almaty Airport’s New International Terminal: Upcycled Aircraft Parts Make Unique Decor
Air Astana, Kazakhstan’s leading airline, continues to demonstrate its commitment to sustainability by presenting furniture made from recycled aircraft parts to Almaty Airport. On June 17, the airline unveiled interior items created by Almaty artists in the international departures area of the new airport terminal.
The initiative, known as Upcycling for the Future, was launched in 2022 and has been displayed in various locations throughout the city. The project aims to promote sustainable development and reduce the environmental impact by repurposing parts of aircraft like the Airbus A321 fuselage and the interior structures of the Boeing B767 to create furniture.
Yuliya Lim, Chief Compliance and Sustainability Officer at Air Astana, emphasized the airline’s dedication to sustainable practices, stating that the Upcycling for the Future project exemplifies the careful treatment of resources and recycling efforts that are a top priority in Air Astana’s strategy. The unique furniture showcased in the new airport terminal serves as a reminder of the importance of sustainability and responsible resource management.
By creatively repurposing aircraft parts into functional and aesthetically pleasing furniture, Air Astana is setting an example for other airlines and industries to prioritize sustainability and environmental consciousness in their operations.
