Almaty Aport Apples: A Kazakh Brand Gaining Global Recognition
ARAGA Seeks International Geographical Indication Registration for Almaty Aport Apples
The Almaty Region Apple Growers Association (ARAGA) in Kazakhstan is in the process of securing international geographical indication registration for Almaty Aport apples. The aim is to establish Almaty Aport as a unique Kazakh brand in the global market.
According to Silk Way TV, the necessary paperwork is being prepared by ARAGA to initiate the registration process. Their application for the Almaty Aport geographical designation was submitted on August 29. The application will undergo a review period of four months, as highlighted by Sholpan Abdreyeva, the director of the intellectual property rights department at the Kazakh Justice Ministry.
Abdreyeva further stated that the certificate for the Almaty Aport geographical indication was issued on October 13, indicating its successful registration under the national procedure. This step is aligned with the directive given by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev in 2019 to elevate Almaty Aport apples to the status of globally recognized brands like Roquefort cheese, Parmesan cheese, or Bordeaux champagne.
To achieve this recognition, the intellectual property rights department is working closely with ARAGA. They are compiling a list of countries where they intend to register Almaty Aport apples as a protected geographical indication. The department will offer guidance and support to ARAGA in completing and submitting the application.
Geographical indication registration provides legal protection to ensure that products originating from specific regions are recognized and marketed as distinct and of high quality. It helps to promote and preserve traditional agricultural practices, protect local economies, and create a strong brand image for the product.
The move to secure international geographical indication registration for Almaty Aport apples demonstrates the commitment of ARAGA and the Kazakh government to promote and protect their unique agricultural products in the global marketplace. As Kazakhstan aims to diversify its economy and boost agricultural exports, the recognition of Almaty Aport apples as a distinct and premium brand will contribute significantly to achieving these goals.
