The Almaty State Puppet Theater Achieves Success at International Puppet Festival in Ottawa
The Almaty State Puppet Theater has once again proven its excellence on the international stage by winning the Grand Prix at the first International Puppet Festival in Ottawa, Canada. The prestigious event took place from July 3-6 and featured performances by three distinguished groups from Canada, Kazakhstan, and Türkiye, showcasing five unique plays.
The Kazakh theater team received the top award for their exceptional production of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” as reported by Khabar TV channel on July 8. Directed by Dina Zhumabayeva in 2019, the production stands out for its innovative approach that combines both dolls and human actors. Only two roles, Romeo and Juliet, are performed by real people, highlighting the eternal power of love amidst life’s transient challenges.
Established in 1935, the Almaty State Puppet Theater has a long history of representing Kazakhstan on the global stage. Over the years, the theater has participated in various international festivals and competitions, showcasing the talent and creativity of Kazakh theater performers. In 2022, the theater also won the Grand Prix at the Golden Dolphin International Puppet Festival in Varna, Bulgaria.
