Ancient Gold Jewelry Unearthed in Turkistan Region

Kazakh archaeologists have made a significant discovery in the Turkistan Region, unearthing gold jewelry that dates back over 2,000 years. The findings were reported by 24.kz on May 22, showcasing the rich history and cultural heritage of the region.

The excavation was conducted by the Center for Archeology of the Ozbekali Zhanibekov South Kazakhstan Pedagogical University at the Tolebaitobe burial ground. The artifacts discovered belong to the period of the Kangju state and highlight the advanced craftsmanship of jewelry during that era. Among the treasures found were intricately designed pieces such as jug, arrowhead for hunting birds, and gold moon-shaped earrings adorned with precious stones.

According to Alexander Podushkin, a professor at the university, the earrings are a remarkable example of jewelry art from the Kangju state. They exhibit a unique style known as gold-turquoise, polychrome, which was characteristic of the Sarmatian-Kangju world. This discovery not only sheds light on the artistic achievements of the past but also indicates the cultural exchanges and trade routes that connected the Kangju state to prominent empires like Rome, Byzantium, Kushan, and China along the Great Silk Road.

Furthermore, archaeologists found a bronze mirror from the Han dynasty in one of the mounds, suggesting the high status of a noble woman buried there. The mirror’s intricate design and historical significance provide insights into the connections between different regions and civilizations during ancient times.

These valuable artifacts will soon be displayed at the National Museum of Kazakhstan, allowing visitors to appreciate the rich history and cultural legacy of the Turkistan Region. This discovery serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and studying the past to better understand our shared heritage.
