2,000-Year-Old Statue Discovered in Dishwasher in Turkey
A 2,000-year-old female statue head, believed to be from the Hellenistic period, has been uncovered in Izmir, Turkey. This ancient artifact was reportedly intended to be smuggled out of the country to fetch a high price at international auctions.
Authorities were tipped off about the illegal activity, leading them to conduct a raid on a residence in Izmir’s Karabağlar district on June 13th. During the search, law enforcement officers discovered the well-preserved head of a female statue concealed in a sack, which was surprisingly found inside a pot in the dishwasher of the house.

The recovered artifact has since been handed over to the Izmir Archeology Museum for further examination and preservation. Additionally, one person was taken into custody at the scene for their suspected involvement in the smuggling operation.
Although the individual was apprehended, they were later released following the necessary legal proceedings. It is unclear at this time whether other suspects were involved in the attempted smuggling.
The prosecutor overseeing the case authorized the release of the detainee, possibly due to insufficient evidence or other legal considerations. However, investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding this incident and to uncover any potential connections to international art trafficking networks.
