Animal Producers and Breeders Union Protests at Prime Ministry – BRTK

Livestock Producers Protest Government Policies in Nicosia

Livestock producers gathered in Nicosia to protest the government’s livestock policies in a demonstration that turned confrontational. The protest began at Hamitköy Circle and Gönyeli Circle, where producers then marched to the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, leaving tractors in front of the Ministry building.

The group of animal producers then proceeded to the Parliament, where Mustafa Naimoğulları, President of the Animal Producers and Breeders Association, addressed the crowd. He declared that their new point of contact would be Prime Minister Ünal Üstel, emphasizing that “the producer has not spoken his final word yet.”

Subsequently, activists stormed the Parliament’s gates and made their demands known to the government. Naimoğulları highlighted the need for cheaper electricity, diesel, and feed for the producers, rather than relying on imported meat.

Tensions escalated as producers clashed with the police outside the Prime Ministry, leading to the brief detainment of five activists. Despite their attempts to meet with the Prime Minister, who was unavailable due to parliamentary duties, Union President Naimoğlulları vowed to intensify their actions until their demands are met.

During the demonstration, security measures were heightened as animal producers burned bales of hay and tried to breach the Prime Ministry’s gates using their tractors. The ongoing protest underscores the challenges faced by livestock producers and their continued efforts to advocate for fairer government policies.
