Anticipated Harvest of 30,000 Tons for Maraş Pepper with Geographical Indication
The harvest season for peppers grown in Kahramanmaraş has begun, with producers working tirelessly in the fields to collect the precious crops. The renowned Maraş pepper, known for its unique flavor, is being turned into flakes and powder in local businesses after being carefully harvested by seasonal workers.
Kahramanmaraş Commodity Exchange President, Mustafa Narlı, highlighted the city’s recovery process following the support received after the earthquake. He stated that Kahramanmaraş, known for its ice cream, textile, gold, metal sectors, and red pepper production, is expecting a yield of 30 thousand tons of peppers this year.
Narlı expressed his desire to increase the recognition of Maraş pepper even further, as it is a product closely associated with the city. Last year, 20 thousand tons of pepper were produced, with a target of 10 thousand tons for export and 20 thousand tons for domestic use. Maraş pepper is exported to various countries, including Germany, England, France, America, Russia, Belgium, Denmark, Australia, Austria, and Portugal.
Farmers like Ağaca Kaynak in the Türkoğlu district are contributing to the production of Maraş pepper with the help of grants and support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Kaynak planted Maraş pepper on 30 decares of land, with a productive harvest season. With a yield of 1,500 to 1,600 kilograms per decare, Kaynak emphasized the importance of support in increasing production.
Pepper seedlings were planted in February, with the Dila variety of Maraş pepper being used in the fields. The harvest season begins in September, with the first harvest already underway. The second harvest is expected to take place in 15 days, with farmers delivering their products to both domestic and foreign markets through intermediary companies.
The efforts of producers and farmers in Kahramanmaraş are crucial in maintaining the reputation and recognition of Maraş pepper, a beloved ingredient in many dishes worldwide.
