The new leaders of the European Union have been decided at the EU Leaders Summit in Brussels, following the EP elections held in June. European Council President Charles Michel announced the proposed names for key positions in the EU for the next 5 years.
It has been suggested that Ursula von der Leyen continue as EU Commission President for another 5 years. Additionally, former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has been elected as the President of the EU Council, and Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas has been proposed as the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
These proposed leaders, with the exception of Antonio Costa, will need to receive a vote of confidence from the EP General Assembly on July 16 before officially assuming their duties. The decisions made at this summit will have a significant impact on the direction and policies of the EU in the coming years.
