Armenian Protesters Clash with Police Over Border Demarcation Dispute
Armenian Protesters Clash with Police Near Border with Azerbaijan
Late in the evening on April 26, tensions rose near the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan as Armenian protesters scuffled with the police in the village of Kirants. The incident occurred as protesters attempted to halt an unmarked vehicle, suspecting it was transporting Azerbaijani cartographers for work related to the demarcation agreement reached between the two countries on April 19.
Since the agreement was made, locals in Kirants have been blocking the road in protest of the border deal. However, after Bishop Bagrat Galstanian, a protest leader, spoke to the crowd, the police allowed one demonstrator to inspect the vehicle. It was revealed that Armenian cartographers were inside, dispelling the fears of Azerbaijani involvement.
The protest in Kirants highlights the deep emotions and concerns within the local community regarding the border agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. As tensions continue to simmer, it is essential for both sides to engage in dialogue and transparency to address the legitimate grievances and fears of the people affected by the border deal.
