Assad’s Continued Deception: The Latest on Syria’s Situation
Abu Mohammed al-Golani, the leader of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group in Syria, has announced plans for opposition groups in the country to be disbanded. In a recent statement, Golani, whose real name is Ahmed al-Shara, revealed that fighters from these disbanded groups will be trained to join regular army units under the defense ministry and will be subject to the law.
Golani also emphasized the importance of protecting minorities in the country and ensuring social justice for all Syrians. He mentioned the need for a “social contract” between the state and all religions to guarantee equal rights and opportunities for all citizens.
During a meeting with a British delegation, Golani discussed the importance of ending sanctions on Syria so that displaced Syrians could return to their country. He called for unity in the multi-ethnic and multi-religious nation, stating that Syria must remain united.
Foreign governments have started to engage with Syria’s new interim rulers, with countries like Turkey, Qatar, the US, and the UK initiating communication with Syrian officials. The EU’s top diplomat also visited Damascus for talks, where she emphasized the importance of real and positive steps from the new Syrian leadership in order to lift sanctions and remove HTS from the EU blacklist.
