Debate on Freedom of Expression and Political Responsibility in Northern Cyprus Parliament
In a recent session in the Northern Cyprus Parliament, Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Deputy, Product Solyalı, delivered a speech emphasizing the importance of the "Right to Show and Freedom of Expression." He began by critiquing the emptiness of parliamentary seats and referencing a notable protest from July 19, 2011, where he indicated that police employed excessive force against demonstrators exercising their rights.
Solyalı highlighted a recent incident where ten individuals carrying a "will us" banner were detained by police, who provided no clear rationale for the arrests. He expressed dissatisfaction that these individuals were held for four hours, asserting that such actions represent a blatant violation of constitutional rights.
In a related matter, Solyalı criticized the lack of safety for journalists from the Cyprus newspaper, whose security measures the police failed to uphold. He chastised the police for neglecting to take action on a situation that could lead to serious consequences, questioning the government’s oversight on organized crime.
The session also addressed the controversial topic of immunity in the case of UBP Deputy Emrah Yeşilırmak. The parliamentary committee’s vote to reject a request to remove Yeşilırmak’s legal immunity faced objections from CTP members, who demanded that the matter be discussed in the General Assembly. UBP Deputy, Oguzhan Hasipoğlu, contended that the committee lacked the authority to decide on immunity, further complicating the debate.
CTP Deputy Sami Özuslu voiced concerns over the government’s handling of a broad array of issues, including the safety of individuals threatened with death, notably journalist Ayşem Akin. He cited a troubling disconnect between government officials and the pressing realities faced by citizens. Özuslu criticized the administration for prioritizing ceremonies over addressing the urgent needs of the people, specifically regarding media freedom and safety.
Speaker of the Parliament, Ziya Öztürkler, addressed accusations regarding the press’s exclusion from events, noting the lack of formal complaints reaching his office. He pledged to investigate any irregularities regarding media access.
Finance Minister Özdemir Berova responded to critiques, defending police actions during the protests and emphasizing their careful approach. He underscored the importance of national pride, linking technological advancements to a strengthened relationship with Turkey. Berova asserted that current threats to journalists must be taken seriously, advocating for police to conduct their duties responsibly.
The session concluded with discussions led by CTP Deputy Teberrüken Uluçay, who connected the themes of economy and politics, underscoring the need for openness in negotiations between the TRNC and Southern Cyprus for economic recovery.
