Astana Achieves Sustainable Development Certification in Central Asia
Astana Becomes First City in Kazakhstan and Central Asia to Receive Sustainable Development Certification
Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first city in Kazakhstan and Central Asia to receive sustainable development certification. This certification was reported by the akimat (city administration) press service on Dec. 13.
The city underwent evaluation based on the ISO 37120 standard on Sustainable Development of Communities, focusing on indicators for city services and quality of life. The assessment was carried out by the World Council on City Data (WCCD), which is the only city certification body in the world.
Astana was assessed on a total of 128 indicators across 19 key areas, including economy, education, health, security, transportation, and more. Experts particularly highlighted the city’s achievements in the areas of economy, ecology, and security, acknowledging the effective solutions implemented in resource management and urban planning.
The ISO 37120 standard, originally developed in 2014 and updated in 2018, is now being followed by over 140 cities worldwide, including major cities like Los Angeles, London, Dubai, Johannesburg, and Warsaw.
Moving forward, the next goal for Astana is to obtain ISO 37122 certification for “smart” cities, as reported by the akimat. This certification will further solidify the city’s commitment to sustainable development and innovation in urban planning.
Overall, Astana’s achievement in receiving sustainable development certification marks a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and resilient city in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
