Astana Hosts International Olympiad for 305 Young Biologists
The 35th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) for schoolchildren has officially begun in Astana, with 305 young biologists from all over the world participating in the prestigious competition. Kazakhstan is hosting the event this year due to its successful track record in previous editions, with its students winning over 70 awards in the past 28 years.
Kazakh Minister of Education Gani Beisembayev expressed his belief that the competition will help nurture a knowledgeable generation and provide opportunities for young participants in the field of biology. He encouraged the students to strive for greatness and potentially become future renowned biologists or Nobel Prize laureates.
The head of the Daryn republican scientific and practical center, Gazdembek Tursunov, commended the efforts of Kazakh scientists and the Ministry of Education in preparing for the Olympiad. He highlighted the dedication of young Kazakh biologists who spent over a year developing tasks for the competition, which have received high praise from international scientists.
A total of 275 jury members have arrived in Kazakhstan to evaluate the rounds of the Olympiad, which will include theoretical and practical tasks covering various areas of biology such as biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and animal anatomy and physiology. The competition will run until July 14th, with participants eagerly preparing to showcase their knowledge and skills.
Among the competitors is Nurtore Torekhanuly, an 11th-grade student representing the Kazakh national team. Torekhanuly shared his passion for biology and his determination to bring home a medal for his country. He emphasized the importance of the Olympiad in shaping his future career in science.
The IBO 2024 promises to be a challenging yet rewarding experience for all participants, offering them a platform to demonstrate their expertise and passion for biology. The event will not only test their knowledge but also inspire them to continue pursuing their interests in the field of science.
