Astana Opera House Opens 12th Theatrical Season with “Kazakh Opera Gala”
The Astana Opera House kicked off its 12th theatrical season with a spectacular concert titled “Kazakh Opera Gala” on Sept. 9, celebrating the rich tradition of Kazakh classical music. The event, which was a showcase of exceptional talent and artistry, was well-received by the audience and critics alike.
One spectator, Omar Kekilbayev, expressed his admiration for the concert, calling it a rare and remarkable display of the great composers’ school of Kazakhstan. He noted that while he had seen many Western European programs, the wealth of works by Kazakh classics presented at the gala was truly extraordinary.
Curated with meticulous care by the opera house’s principal conductor Alan Buribayev, the program featured a diverse range of Kazakh opera, from epic to lyrical. The evening began with a powerful performance of “Qurmanghazy” by Akhmet and Gaziza Zhubanovs, capturing the essence of the Kazakh steppe.
Highlights of the concert included Ulpan Aubakirova’s soulful rendition of Aqtoty’s aria from “Aqan Seri – Aqtoty” by Sydyq Mukhamedzhanov, and Talgat Galeyev’s stirring interpretation of Alpamys’ aria from Yerkegali Rakhmadiyev’s “Alpamys.” Aigerim Amanzholova’s portrayal of Aq-Zhunis from Yevgeniy Brussilovsky’s “Yer-Targhyn” showcased a new female character in Kazakh opera, challenging traditional stereotypes.
The evening continued with a vibrant mix of arias, duets, symphonic works, and overtures, captivating the audience with each performance. The finale, featuring “Betashar” from “Abai” by Akhmet Zhubanov and Latif Khamidi, received a standing ovation, prompting Maestro Buribayev to return for an encore performance of Yeskendir Khassangaliyev’s “Atameken.”
Regular spectator Gulbanu Akhmetova praised the concert, describing it as a touching and profound performance of the national repertoire. She expressed excitement for the upcoming season, anticipating more musical surprises and discoveries that would continue to inspire and delight audiences.
