Audi Pioneers New Tire Waste Solution in Győr

Audi Hungaria, in collaboration with New Energy Kft., has implemented a new tire waste recycling process at its Győr site. The collaboration aims to recover tire waste chemically, eliminating the release of micro-plastics and harmful substances into the environment. The process used is called pyrolysis, where waste tires are converted into oil. The resulting oil is then used by petrochemical companies to produce new plastics, while the technical soot is utilized in tire production. The gases produced during pyrolysis are employed to generate the high temperatures required for the process.

Audi Hungaria has made the use of environmentally friendly technologies a priority, not only in production but also throughout the life cycle of its products. The company has implemented various sustainability measures over the years, including its Mission: Zero environmental program. Through initiatives like the Aluminium Closed Loop project, Audi Hungaria has achieved closed loop recycling of part of its aluminum waste. The company continues to explore ways to reduce resource consumption and minimize its ecological footprint.

This successful cooperation with New Energy has paved the way for further possibilities in the chemical recycling of plastic waste streams from production. Audi Hungaria is also investigating options for the recycling of plastic waste with its waste management partners. The collaboration and research between Audi Hungaria and New Energy were managed by DBH Investment, with Büchl Hungaria providing support for the waste management aspect of the program.

In addition to tire waste recycling, Audi Hungaria has taken significant steps to reduce its environmental impact. The company has been carbon neutral since 2020 and has been utilizing geothermal energy since 2015, resulting in the reduction of around 21,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Furthermore, Audi Hungaria operates Europe’s largest rooftop solar farm on its premises, covering 160,000 square meters. The company strives to recycle almost 100 percent of the waste it generates.
