Austria Reveals Occupation Plan for Lake Fertő, Says Minister Lazarus

Construction and Transportation Minister János Lázár unveiled plans for significant infrastructure investments in Sopron, Hungary, during a press conference on Tuesday. Following discussions with city leaders, Lázár highlighted the completion of the last segment of the M85 expressway, linking Sopron to Győr. He announced a budget of approximately EUR 15m (HUF 6bn) for road repaving within the city and an additional EUR 5m (HUF 1.9bn) allocated by the city council for road upgrades.
One of the major initiatives mentioned by Lázár was the government’s aim to expand the tracks managed by GYSEV, a regional railway company and a significant contributor to Sopron’s economy. The plan involves increasing the length of tracks from 450km to 1,200km and exploring the transformation of a local industrial park into a logistics base for transshipment operations.
Furthermore, Minister Lázár addressed concerns about the development of Lake Fertő, highlighting an occupation plan proposed by Austria. He emphasized the importance of providing Hungarian residents with access to the same recreational services as those on the Austrian side of the lake, expressing a desire for equal opportunities and enhanced facilities in Hungary. Lázár criticized the disparity in development between the two sides of the lake, with Austria seemingly prioritizing its own interests over Hungary’s.
To address environmental concerns surrounding Lake Fertő, the government is open to dialogue with NGOs and supports mediation efforts led by Member of Parliament Attila Barcza. With a focus on balancing economic development and environmental conservation, Lázár aims to ensure equitable access to resources and amenities for Hungarian citizens.
Overall, the infrastructure investments outlined by Minister János Lázár demonstrate a commitment to enhancing transportation networks, promoting economic growth, and addressing environmental challenges in Sopron and beyond.
