Austrian Construction Company Held Responsible for Motorway Repair Due to Faulty Construction

The damaged section of the M30 motorway in Hungary is set to be repaired and returned to traffic by the end of October, according to the Minister of Construction and Transport, János Lázár. The repair works are estimated to cost HUF 5 billion (EUR 12.4 million), and the contractor, Strabag, will be responsible for covering the entire cost as a guarantee repair. The minister emphasized that the guarantee would be enforced, and the contractor has already commenced the repair works with the assistance of experts from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

The M30 motorway section in Szikszó was closed last year due to structural issues, including shifting road structures and cracked pavement. The cause of the failure was identified as continuous water leakage in the subsoil that had not been treated, requiring the removal and rebuilding of hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of soil.

During a public forum in Szikszó, János Lázár expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to individuals who were affected by the closure of the motorway. He also mentioned plans to compensate those who purchased motorway stickers in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county but could not utilize them due to the closure.

To alleviate the traffic burden resulting from the closure of the affected section, the Ministry of Construction and Transport will create a temporary extra lane at the junction of the main road 3 and road 37 near Miskolc. This additional lane will allow smoother access to Miskolc and the M30 on-ramp.

The repair works will involve the demolition of the slipped section and its replacement with reinforced concrete columns. The embankment, track structure, and layers of asphalt will then be rebuilt to ensure the safety and sustainability of the motorway.

Overall, the Ministry is committed to resolving the issues on the M30 motorway promptly to restore normal traffic flow and ensure the safety of road users.
