
Average Household Size Decreases to 3.14 People in 2023

The Turkish Statistical Institute has released the “Family 2023 with Statistics” bulletin, providing insights into the dynamics of households in Turkey.
According to the data from the Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS), the average household size in Turkey has decreased from 4 people in 2008 to 3.14 people in 2023.
Provincial analysis reveals that Şırnak has the highest average household size with 4.86 people, followed by Şanlıurfa and Batman. On the other hand, provinces like Çanakkale, Giresun, and Balıkesir have the lowest average household size.
The rate of single-person households has increased from 14.4 percent in 2015 to 19.7 percent in 2023. The proportion of single nuclear families has decreased while households with extended families have also seen a decline.
Notably, the province of Gümüşhane has the highest proportion of single-person households, while Gaziantep has the highest proportion of single nuclear families.
In terms of consanguineous marriages, the rate has been decreasing over the years. Mardin had the highest proportion of individuals with consanguineous marriages in their last marriage.
The survey also highlighted that custody of children in divorce cases is mostly given to the mother. Additionally, access to technology like the internet has significantly increased in households.
The poverty rate in 2023 stands at 21.7 percent, with different household types experiencing varying levels of poverty. The majority of individuals own the house they live in, while some face housing-related challenges.
Overall, the bulletin provides a comprehensive overview of the demographic and socioeconomic trends within Turkish households in 2023.
