Turkey’s Defense Industry Soars to New Heights with UAVs, Combat Aircraft, and Satellites
In the past 20 years, Turkey has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its defense industry, with the development of high-tech national aircraft that have captured the world’s attention. From unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to combat aircraft and even satellites, Turkey’s aerospace capabilities have reached new levels of sophistication.
Among the standout achievements are the UAVs that have revolutionized warfare tactics and attracted interest from friendly and allied nations. Starting in 2009, Turkey began developing its own UAVs, such as the BAYRAKTAR TB-2, ANKA-S, AKSUNGUR, and AKINCI, equipped with national engines. These UAVs have significantly enhanced Turkey’s capabilities in counterterrorism efforts and cross-border operations.
Turkey has now become a global leader in UAV and UCAV (unmanned combat aerial vehicle) technologies, with recent milestones like the first flight of the jet-powered KIZILELMA and ANKA-3 unmanned aircraft. These advancements demonstrate Turkey’s commitment to innovation and self-sufficiency in defense technology.
In the realm of manned aircraft, Turkey has also made significant progress. The HÜRKUŞ, a trainer aircraft, took its maiden flight in 2013, paving the way for jet-powered planes like the national combat aircraft KAAN. The HÜRJET, Turkey’s first national jet, exceeded the speed of sound for the first time this year, marking a major achievement in aerospace technology.
Additionally, Turkey has expanded its presence in space with the launch of its first domestic communication satellite, TÜRKSAT 6A. Sent into orbit this year, TÜRKSAT 6A represents Turkey’s growing capabilities in space technology and communications.
