Azerbaijan Prepares to Host COP29 in Baku
A meeting was held at the UAE Embassy in Turkmenistan on June 12, 2024, to discuss the upcoming COP29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan, Gismat Gezalov, spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of Azerbaijan’s role in the fight against climate change.
Azerbaijan has prioritized green environmental growth and declared 2024 as the “Year of Solidarity for a Green World” to boost climate action nationally and internationally. The country is committed to reducing methane emissions and promoting alternative energy projects, despite its rich oil and natural gas reserves.
The partnership between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan in addressing climate change issues was also emphasized. The two countries are working together to combat climate change and contribute to COP29. The upcoming conference aims to focus on the common interests of both nations and encourage equal participation in addressing the climate crisis.
Youth involvement in environmental protection was highlighted as well, with young people in Turkmenistan actively participating in climate action initiatives. The volunteer program for COP29 in Azerbaijan was launched, with around 3,000 local and international volunteers expected to play a key role in the conference’s success.
Azerbaijan’s progress in transitioning to environmentally friendly energy was also discussed, with the country aiming to reach 2 gigawatts of installed capacity from renewable sources by 2027. Projects like the construction of solar and wind power plants with the help of international partners, such as the UAE’s Masdar company, showcase Azerbaijan’s commitment to sustainable development.
Overall, Azerbaijan’s preparations for COP29 in Baku are on track, with a focus on inclusive participation, environmental sustainability, and international collaboration. The conference is set to be a significant milestone in Azerbaijan’s commitment to combating climate change and promoting a green future.
