Balkan Beats: Serbian, Greek, and Romanian Music at Budapest’s Day of the Dance House
The Day of the Dance House celebrations in Budapest will feature outdoor programs and a gala concert showcasing not only Hungarian folk music but also Serbian, Greek, and Romanian tunes. The event will take place on May 3 at Liszt Ferenc Square and the Liszt Academy.
The festivities will begin at 2 PM in Liszt Ferenc Square with outdoor activities such as dance lessons and craft workshops. The programs will run until 6:30 PM, providing entertainment for all ages. In the evening, a gala concert will be held in the Grand Hall of the Academy of Music, focusing on the traditions of ethnic minorities in Hungary.
Audiences can expect to hear music from various regions, including Transylvanian string instrument music, tamburica melodies from Bačka (Serbia), bagpipe tunes from Felvidék (southern Slovakia), Serbian kolo dance music, Romanian dances from Méhkerék, and Greek songs. These performances will be presented by talented individuals associated with the Liszt Academy.
The gala concert will open with a speech by Ferenc Sebő, a prominent figure in the dance house movement and instructor at the Department of Folk Music. The event, organized for the fourteenth time by the Department of Folk Music and the Hungarian Heritage House, commemorates the start of the Hungarian dance house movement 53 years ago.
This year’s celebration is particularly significant due to special anniversaries, including the 150th anniversary of the Liszt Academy, the 15th anniversary of the Department of Folk Music, and the centenary of Bálint Sárosi’s birth. Sárosi, a respected folk music researcher, made notable contributions to Hungarian ethnomusicology and the dance house movement.
