Barge Collision Causes German Vessel to Sink in Danube River

The Antonia cargo barge, a German vessel, recently collided with a Danube bridge and subsequently sank near Palánka. The barge was carrying over a thousand tonnes of fertiliser at the time of the accident. Local reports from telex.hu indicated that no trace of the fertiliser was found in the Danube following the incident. Despite the successful removal of the wreck from the river, the Serbian-Croatian border crossing had to be closed to traffic as a result.
The specific type of fertiliser on board the German ship has not been disclosed by the media. However, experts suspect that it may have contained ammonia. If this is the case, there is concern that pathogens could proliferate in the region, potentially leading to the death of fish and other animals in the river.
Additionally, a Hungarian ship recently sank in Germany, with the crew narrowly escaping. More information on that incident can be found HERE.
As the situation unfolds, authorities will need to assess and mitigate any potential environmental impacts caused by the sunken barge and its cargo. The priority will be to prevent any further harm to the surrounding ecosystem. The featured images provide further insight into the aftermath of the accident.
As the authorities continue their response efforts, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate measures to safeguard the health of the Danube and its surrounding areas.
