Turgut Akçın, President of the Northern Cyprus Citrus Producers Union Association, expressed the problems experienced in citrus fruit, and stated that the citrus harvest has ended, the new season is about to come, but the full price of the products has not been paid by the producers, and some producers are still not able to harvest their products.

Making a written statement, Akçın said that about a thousand tons of products were on the branch or under the trees due to the Mediterranean fruit fly attack, and demanded that work be done to pay for the citrus fruits that could not be cut and remained on the branch while the drought payments were made.

Stating that the producer should not be victimized, Akçın demanded that the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources make a payment from a fund.

Akçın said, “It is incomprehensible that Cypfruvex is kept separate from these institutions while the debts of all government institutions are paid or written off”.

“When the citrus season started, the dollar was 16-17 TL, today it has increased to 30 TL, so TL continues with a loss of around 100 percent. The producer will continue to incur financial losses until the entire product is paid for. There is an increase of more than 100 percent on the basis of foreign currency in the fertilizers and pesticides it buys. I hope that some producers do not go to dry their gardens due to the increase in water prices, extreme heat and low yield. However, due to the excessive salinization of the waters, it is seen that many gardens in many villages, especially in Aydınköy, Güneşköy, Yayla and Güzelyurt, are in a bad condition due to salinization and long-term irrigation with salty water, that is, 5-6 thousand PP m water. It seems that leaf fall has started in many gardens.” Arguing that it is thought-provoking that the water coming from the motherland Turkey is not given to the gardens even though the season is almost over, Akçın said, “We are faced with losing both the land and the gardens by watering our export product that brings the most foreign currency to the country with salt water. It is obvious that this irrigation project cannot be carried out by the Department of Water Affairs. Since March, the water coming from Turkey is ready, but the Water Works Department has not been able to put the irrigation system on track due to the lack of financial, equipment and infrastructure.

Criticizing the lack of a citrus policy, Akçın stated that for this reason, import permission was given to lemons, and that lemon and grapefruit plantations were cut and all of them were grafted with mandora (king).

Akçın continued:

Referring to the planting and planting of citrus and vineyards, Akçın said, “There is no free economy in agriculture. Everyone sows what they want, but cannot think what the result will be. It is seen that those concerned, that is, those who are in government, do not take any measures to guide and take precautions.

“Even the lands leased by the state for grain cultivation, mandora was planted on all a few thousand acres within two years. Hundreds of people in the region were allowed to randomly drill artesian wells. This led to the decrease of water and, in some regions, the salinization of the wells in a short time.

Saying that Direct Income Support was not paid, Akçın stated that while the first installment should have been paid in May, the second installment could not be paid even though the payment was received.

Noting that the producer was having a hard time and that they were cut off from production, Akçın demanded that the payments be made as soon as possible.
