“Don’t Just Say It” against Violence Against Women, carried out by the European Union Information Center and the Women’s Life Support Association (KAYAD). Within the scope of the campaign, the Circle of Resistance Monument in Nicosia was dressed with colorful embroidery today.

The event, which was held within the framework of the “16 Days of Activism Campaign” with the aim of combating violence against women, strengthening women’s rights and raising social awareness, emphasized that violence against women is a serious violation of human rights and that the reality of domestic violence should not be ignored. The need for the Domestic Violence Law in TRNC was also underlined at the event.

The embroideries on the monument were produced within the scope of the “Handicraft: Strong Women, Strong Lives” event series held in rural areas.

At the event, European Commission Communication Program Manager Deniz Birinci, KAYAD President Meral Akıncı, KAYAD volunteer Mine Atlı and Nicosia Turkish Municipality Mayor Mehmet Harmancı made speeches.

European Commission Communication Program Manager Deniz Biri emphasized that the event organized within the scope of the campaign to combat violence against women was meaningful.

“We color the Circle of Resistance Monument with the hand-made embroideries of our women, thus symbolically revealing the power of solidarity and unity in the fight against violence against women.” said Biri, and added that this event was organized in cooperation with KAYAD under the slogan “Don’t Just Say It and Pass It Away!” He stated that it was one of the important steps of his campaign.

KAYAD volunteer Mine Atlı stated that today they are taking a stand against violence against women, which is a social wound.

Noting that women’s productivity, labor and solidarity come to life despite this violent structure, Atlı said, “As we all know, violence against women is not only an individual problem; It is a social issue and a serious violation of human rights. This violence seeks to restrict women’s lives, freedoms and dreams. However, as women, we show our strength, creative energy and solidarity that transcends violence at every opportunity.” he said.

Atlı stated that his stakeholders, who were here with KAYAD years ago, were instrumental in placing this monument in the city center as a symbol to increase the visibility of violence against women, within the scope of the “Resist Against Violence Project”.

Stating that the Circle of Resistance Monument, where 50 thousand vehicles pass daily, is a symbol of the fight against violence against women, Harmancı said that this is the most basic message that Nicosia gives to its stakeholders and violence against women.
