“International Turkish Cypriot Foundations Symposium with Legal Dimensions”, organized in cooperation with Ankara Social Sciences University (ASBU) Northern Cyprus Campus, Cyprus Foundations Administration and Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), has started.
The opening of the symposium, which will last two days, was held at Bilal Ağa Cultural Center in Maraş, Famagusta. The second day of the symposium will take place tomorrow at the Bedesten in Nicosia.
The opening program started with a moment of silence and the National Anthem, followed by speeches. After the plaques were presented to the institutions and organizations that contributed to the symposium, the reception started. Following the reception, the first day’s sessions were held.
At the symposium, the Foundations Administration also prepared an exhibition about the transfer of foundations properties in Maraş by the Greeks.
The opening of the symposium was attended by Republic of Turkey (TR) Ambassador to Nicosia Yasin Ekrem Serim, UBP Deputy Sunat Atun, Cyprus Foundations Administration Chairman Selahaddin Bayırkan, Cyprus Foundations Administration General Manager Mustafa Tümer, TIKA Northern Cyprus Coordinator Havva Pınar Özcan Küçükçavuş, ASBÜ TRNC Rector Prof. Dr. Enver Arpa, ASBU Rector Prof. Dr. Musa Kazım Arıcan and some other officials attended.
In the symposium, where 18 scientists will make presentations, issues related to Turkish Cypriot Foundations will be re-examined and discussed from both a legal and interdisciplinary perspective, especially in terms of international law, international relations, foundation law, Islamic law and the history of foundations, according to the rising world values of the 21st century. New scientific data will be tried to be revealed.
ASBU TRNC Rector Prof. Dr. In his speech at the opening, Enver Arpa said, “It is a historical day” and explained that the university has been continuing its activities in TRNC for four years.
Stating that they organize one international symposium every year and that they deal with many issues academically, Arpa stated that they invited experts in their fields on the subjects they determined to this symposium. Noting that 18 scientists will make presentations at the symposium, Arpa said that the presentations will also be prepared for publication.
Mustafa Tümer, General Manager of the Cyprus Foundations Administration, said, “Foundations are the only indicator of our existence in Cyprus” and stated that they are trying to introduce the foundations that are the indicator of existence.
Emphasizing the importance of being beneficial to all humanity, Tümer noted that the Cyprus Foundations Administration has been standing for 453 years. Listing the first Foundations established in Cyprus, Tümer pointed out that more than two thousand Foundations have survived to this day.
Stating that they organized the symposium with the motivation of “leaving any question marks in mind” about the foundations, Tümer said, “I wholeheartedly believe that the booklet that will be created with the symposium will further strengthen our place in the literature in the world.”
TİKA Northern Cyprus Coordinator Havva Pınar Özcan Küçükçavuş stated that TİKA Presidency is an institution that strives to support scientific cooperation and the academic world around the world.
Expressing that it is very valuable for them to be a stakeholder in this symposium, Küçükçavuş said that they support scientific programs all over the world.
Thanking those who contributed to the symposium, Küçükçavuş said, “The real work falls on our valuable scientists today,” and noted that presentations will be made on very important topics.
ASBU Rector Prof. Dr. Musa Kazım Arıcan started his speech with the verses of Poet Arif Nihat Asya and stated that Turkish-Islamic civilization is a Foundation civilization.
Pointing out the importance of holding the comprehensive symposium in Maraş, which examines this important heritage based on the foundation culture, Arıcan said, “This is probably the first scientific event held here. “I see it as a historical step and we are witnessing a historical moment,” he said.
Stating that the Foundation culture that settled in Cyprus after the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus in 1571 radically transformed the religious, social and economic structure of the island, Arıcan noted that the first Foundations established on the island had the aim of serving the social structure of Cyprus and ensuring peace and solidarity.
Stating that the foundations contributed greatly to Cyprus gaining a Turkish-Islamic identity and played a major role in increasing the welfare level of the island’s people, Arıcan said that many important issues will be discussed in the symposium.
“The Closed Maraş land we are currently in is a Foundation property. “It belongs to the Mustafa Pasha, Abdullah Pasha and Bilal Agha Foundations,” said Arıcan, adding that all parties agreed on this issue and that the issue that needs to be resolved is how these immovable properties later came into the possession of third parties and how they should be given to the parties, taking into account the rights of the mutasarrifs.
