Fuat Topaloğlu, President of the Turkish Cypriot Contemporary Public Vehicles Operators Association (KAR-İŞ), announced that they will stop their transportation activities if the tariff regulation is not made.

In his written statement on the subject, Topaloğlu stated that there has been no price regulation in the transportation sector for 16 months and that the commission affiliated with the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has not yet met because the permit board appointments have not been made. Underlining that they gave the government 1 week to take action, Topaloğlu emphasized that they could not continue transportation due to the current economic difficulties in the sector, and announced that they decided to stop all transportation in the country, including tourism.

Topaloğlu said in his statement: “We can no longer sustain the transportation sector. All our well-intentioned attempts and efforts were wasted. While all costs in the sector increased in foreign currency, the minimum wage was increased three times. This situation made the burden of the sector unbearable. The transportation industry has reached the point of bankruptcy!” he said.

Drawing attention to the economic pressures in the sector, Topaloğlu stated that transportation services are becoming increasingly expensive, but there is no price increase. Saying that the government abandoned the sector to its fate, Topaloğlu said, “We demand the tariff regulation that is our right. This crisis cannot be sustained any longer. “I call out to the authorities once again: Take action,” he said.

Topaloğlu stated that otherwise, they will stop all transportation, including the tourism sector, and if a solution is not found, the society will face a major crisis. “We are on the verge of a social crisis. “The situation has now become unsustainable,” said Topaloğlu, calling on industry stakeholders to take action to find a common solution.

Emphasizing the importance of the transportation sector, Topaloğlu said:

“The transportation sector is one of the cornerstones of a country’s economic and social structure. Transportation of goods and people ensures the uninterrupted continuation of life from production to consumption, from trade to tourism. The effective operation of logistics networks allows domestic and international trade to be carried out efficiently. “The sector is a critical infrastructure that revitalizes the economy and makes people’s lives easier.”

Topaloğlu stated that if this bottleneck in the sector is not resolved, social life and economy will be deeply affected, and invited the authorities to take action as soon as possible.
