That’s why water is a vital need not only for us but for all humanity and living things. Our country, an arid island country, has had to struggle with thirst for centuries.For these reasons, the water issue has been among the top priority issues of the island of Cyprus throughout history. The project of bringing water from Turkey began to be voiced loudly for the first time in the 1960s and turned into a political discourse in the 1980s.It is one of the most vital projects that was tried in the 1990s with balloons but could not be sustained, was included in our government program for the first time in 2009, when we were in power alone, as a project to bring water through pipes, the foundations of which were laid in 2012 during our government, the first stages of which were completed and implemented in 2015.Time has proven right not those who oppose this project, but those who, like us, advocate for the implementation of the project.Nowadays, I am very excited and happy to see that the first stages of the agricultural irrigation phase, which is the second largest phase of the project after the potable water phase, have been completed, not only as a prime minister but also as a Turkish Cypriot. This giant project, called the Project of the Century, is being realized step by step, contrary to those who say it can never be realized.On this occasion, I would like to express my endless gratitude to all the Governments of the Republic of Turkey, especially the President of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and the Vice President of the Republic of Turkey, Mr. Cevdet Yılmaz, who have an important share in making dreams come true.Some of us may not remember, but the cable and electricity project is one of the projects voiced by us in 1984.and years later, God has blessed us to take the first steps to make the dream of electricity a reality. Hopefully, we will all witness another dream come true. As long as we walk together with Turkey, as one brother and sister, with full trust and harmony in each other, it should be known that there can be no great project or dream that the Turkish Cypriot People cannot realize.Within the scope of the “Guzelyurt and Mesarya Plain Irrigation Project”, which is the 2nd stage of the Water Transmission Project to TRNC, an enormous tunnel with a length of 5.7 kilometers was built by Turkish Engineers.In addition, kilometers of water transmission lines have been built and continue to be built to bring water to Güzelyurt Plain and Mesarya Plain.The Project, which currently provides irrigation of 18 thousand decares in the Güzelyurt plain, will be able to irrigate approximately 35 thousand decares of land in Güzelyurt and approximately 98 thousand decares of land in the Mesarya Plain, when completed with all stages. When the project is fully completed, 75 million cubic meters of water coming from Turkey will give life to our lands and people… This means a lot for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. With the global climate crisis and its effects, water resources are decreasing day by day, and countries are on the verge of fighting for water or are fighting for it. Therefore, transferring the lifeblood of Turkey from its own territory to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus appears before us as a vital event rather than a financial event. As an island, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus may not be a major agricultural country. But meeting the food needs of ourselves and our guests coming to our country from abroad is extremely important, vital, economical and strategic.Today, the water meets the Güzelyurt plain. He will meet with Mesarya tomorrow.So, what does it actually mean for the water of life to meet with the Güzelyurt plain? It is useful to look at this.Water means the protection of citrus fruits, which have been grown in the Güzelyurt plain for years, but are decreasing day by day due to drought and salinization. Accordingly, it means the survival of the citrus processing factories established there.It means that the employees there continue to find work and food. It means that all sectors working in the agricultural sector there hold on tightly to their own lands.In summary, it means protecting the ecosystem there. Protection of the ecosystem means food, it means jobs, it means that the people of the region do not have to migrate. By the way, I think it is important to point out that citrus fruits are extremely important not only for the region, but also for our country’s economy, as it is our second largest export item after processed dairy products. The meeting of water with the Mesarya plain will also have extremely positive effects on the country’s agriculture.As in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Water and Soil Master Plan Meeting here today, it will be shaped according to the Water Master Plan with the work carried out by both experts in Turkey and the Agricultural Research and Agriculture Department affiliated with our Ministry of Agriculture. Of course, how and how the water will be used is as important as the availability of water.Revising the agricultural sector according to the master plan and switching to more efficient agricultural models to be determined here should also be handled holistically.As the government, we care about this issue as much as the supply of water. And we continue our work on this issue. We have a goal to bring the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus together with the world…In order to meet the world, it is necessary to be ready for the world. We continue to move forward with firm steps towards this goal, hand in hand and heart to heart with Turkey.We work with this understanding and take the necessary steps to implement major projects.The water project was one of them.The airport project was one of them.The project of bringing electricity from Turkey via cable with an interconnected system is one of them. Processes such as the development of highways, structural improvements in health and education, steps to be taken in the field of technology, and the transition to high-speed internet, which are included in the Financial and Economic Cooperation Agreement we signed with Turkey, will all be our steps in line with this vision. At this point, we see the greatest support, as always, from our homeland, Turkey.As I conclude my words, I would like to express my gratitude to the President of Turkey, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who gave full support to the water project, one of the biggest projects of the century, and made this big dream come true in a short period of 3 years. Prime Minister Dr. included the Water Project in the government program in 2009. I offer my respects to Derviş Eroğlu, and I remember with respect and mercy one of our late Prime Ministers, Mr. İrsen Küçük, who took office after him and laid the first steps and foundations of the project.
