President Ersin Tatar said that they conveyed to United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that they could only sit at the negotiation table for an agreement on the basis of two states in Cyprus.

After his meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York, President Tatar made statements to journalists and answered questions at the Türkevi.

“If there is an agreement in Cyprus, it will be on the basis of two states,” Tatar said, adding that they conveyed to Secretary General Guterres that if this is accepted, they can sit in official negotiations and discuss various aspects of the Cyprus issue.

Noting that this new policy is being carried out together with the guarantor country Turkey, Tatar reminded that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in his speech at the UN General Assembly this year as well as last year, emphasized that an agreement would only be possible in Cyprus under these conditions.

Tatar, however, noted that leaving the main negotiation table aside, a tripartite meeting could be held if the Greek side accepts, regarding the proposals previously made by the Turkish side to establish cooperation and trust between the two sides.

Tatar used the following statements in his speech:

“After explaining these to Mr. Secretary General and showing understanding, of course, dialogue and communication are extremely important, in order to establish cooperation and trust between the two parties, the essence of the Cyprus issue should be put aside, the main negotiation table, as I had previously brought to the agenda last July. I informed him that tripartite meetings could be held, under the chairmanship of the UN Secretary-General, with the participation of both leaders, as two equal parties, to address issues such as natural resources around the island, renewable energy, cable connection and irregular migration, and clearing of mines. He will also make a research and evaluation of this. “It is not possible for us to move on to official negotiations without our equal sovereignty and equal international status being accepted.”

Tatar stated that they conveyed to the Secretary General that they had suggestions to open a commercial gate in Haspolat in order to facilitate mutual entry and exit in order to develop trade with Southern Cyprus. Tatar said, “When I suggested opening the Haspolat gate in order to both relieve the congestion at the Metehan gate and develop trade between the two sides, he stated that this was the right approach and that this should be done.”

Tatar said, “We conveyed again to the Secretary General that the TRNC can continue on its way as a state, and on the other hand, it can be part of an agreement in cooperation between the two states.” “We conveyed that it has changed a lot and the UN should understand this very well,” he said.

President Tatar said, “The Greek side has always spoiled the game in previous negotiations” and underlined that the main intention of the Greek side is to evolve this issue into a unitary structure. Tatar said, “First of all, maybe a federal model, but their main goal is to assimilate the Turkish Cypriots in an EU without Turkey. To consume us with zero soldiers, zero guarantee and to turn the island into a pure Ynan island. “We emphasized that we would never approve such a process,” he said.

Stating that Secretary General Guterres listened to the demands of the Turkish side with understanding, Tatar continued his words as follows:

“The important thing is to be able to do these on legal grounds. We base all of this on legitimate and legal grounds. Greeks should never be superior to us. But Turkish Cypriots are there. With its own state, its democracy, its own institutions and organizations. The important thing now is to crown this. “This is possible with the two-state solution model.”

Tatar noted that Greek leader Hristodulidis won the election with the support of radical groups, and therefore what he had in mind was to draw the Turkish Cypriots into the unitary structure, and stated that the Greek leader’s latest proposals were insincere. Tatar said, “If they continue to deny the existence of the TRNC, a permanent peace will not be achieved in Cyprus.”

Noting that they conveyed to the Secretary General that they expect the UN to be impartial, Tatar continued his words as follows:

“The Secretary General understands when we say that there is no point in starting negotiations on the same (federal) ground. I also see that there may be a lack of contact between the Secretary General and the Security Council. Because the Secretary General has seen the truth. Because he has gained a lot of experience on these issues in the last 8 years, he sees the facts. “Hopefully, soon the Security Council will see these facts, they need to see them.”

Tatar also stated that he and his representatives met with representatives of different countries in New York and explained the new policy of the Turkish Cypriot side.
