President Ersin Tatar, receiving the Security Forces Commander Major General Zorlu Topaloğlu on the occasion of the August 1 Social Resistance Day, emphasized that August 1 was a turning point for the Turkish Cypriots.

According to the statement made by the Presidency, President Ersin Tatar received the Commander of the Security Forces, Major General Zorlu Topaloğlu, and the accompanying delegation on the occasion of the August 1 Social Resistance Day.

In his speech at the reception, President Tatar reminded that on August 1, the 47th anniversary of the Security Forces Command (GKK), the 65th anniversary of the Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT) and the 452nd anniversary of the conquest of Cyprus will be celebrated.

Explaining that Turkish Cypriots have been in Cyprus for more than 450 years, Tatar stated that many peoples and states in the world do not have such a long history. Tatar also noted that the fact that Turkish Cypriots have lived in Cyprus for centuries is one of the main pillars of their sovereign equality.

Pointing out that TMT has made great contributions to the Turkish Cypriots’ struggle for freedom and existence, President Tatar said that the Turkish Cypriots took their rightful place as the founding partner of the Republic of Cyprus, which was established in 1960, with an international agreement. Stating that the Turkish Cypriots were excluded from the Republic of Cyprus after 3 years at gunpoint, Tatar noted that they struggled for existence until 1974 and that the Turkish Cypriots gained their freedom with the Cyprus Peace Operation.

Reminding that the Turkish Cypriots established their institutions and organizations after the states they gradually established, President Tatar stated that TMT was replaced by the GKK in 1976.

Emphasizing that it is a requirement of human rights for Turkish Cypriots to live in peace and tranquility, the President said, “The Security Forces Command, with its police force and military organization, serves for the peace and security of the country. Missions are successfully carried out in cooperation and solidarity with the Turkish Armed Forces in the air, on land and at sea in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean.”

In his speech, Commander of the Security Forces Zorlu Topaloğlu drew attention to the fact that 3 important developments took place in Turkish Cypriot history on August 1st, and explained that Cyprus was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1571, TMT was established in 1958 and GKK was established in 1976.
