The Social and Community Awareness Support Project in Sustainable Education, which will be implemented by the Cyprus Hearing and Speech Impaired Foundation, was introduced.

The project, which will be implemented with the slogan ‘I Love You, I Am Your Voice’, will be carried out under the auspices of the Presidency, under the leadership of President Ersin Tatar’s wife Sibel Tatar, with the support of the TRNC Ministry of National Education, NEU Social Research and Development Center and Telsim, and under the sponsorship of BRT Main Media.

Bahire Doğru, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Cyprus Hearing and Speech Impaired Foundation, made the opening speech of the introductory event and stated that, as the Foundation, they have carried out community and people-oriented projects so far and that they attach great importance to education.

Doğru stated that the Social and Community Awareness Support Project in Sustainable Education, which will consist of 16 educational videos prepared with the support of BRT, will be implemented with the publication of the first video on January 5.

Noting that there are not enough sign language instructors in the country, Doğru emphasized that communication is a human right.

Near East University Vice Rector Prof. Dr Mustafa Kurt also stated that this initiative is dedicated to raising awareness about inclusive education and developing a deeper understanding between children and their peers.

Stating that, as Near East University, they believe that education is not only a right but also a powerful tool to shape a better future, Kurt stated that it is necessary to strive for a world where no child is left out of the conversation.

Sibel Tatar, wife of President Ersin Tatar, who spearheaded the project, also pointed out that hearing and speech impaired people have difficulties in accessing information and stated that the most important problem is access to emergency lines.

Pointing out that education is of great importance along with accessibility, Sibel Tatar underlined that the right to education is an indispensable right and that this right must be recognized by the state.

Stating that there are 7 public special education schools in the country, but there is no system that can fully teach sign language in these schools, Sibel Tatar said that children should at least learn to speak their native language with a language therapist and sign language with sign language instructors.

Sibel Tatar explained that the Special Education Law was passed by the parliament, but it is not applicable because the statute has not yet been implemented, and that if the statute becomes applicable, children will be able to receive the right to education, which is their most natural right.

President Ersin Tatar, who was his guest at the event, emphasized that the state will always continue to stand behind such initiatives while shaping its social policies.

Stating that everyone should help the hearing impaired to be integrated into society and to gain their rights, Tatar said that hearing and speech impaired individuals can be supported by giving more space to sign language in the education system and television channels.

Stating that, as the Presidency, they are trying to voice and support 6 thousand disabled people in the country, Tatar stated that they are happy to continue their work to be sensitive to the problems of disabled people.

Tatar emphasized that they are ready to make legal regulations if necessary.

Following the speeches, the promotional video of the project prepared in cooperation with BRT was shown.

At the event, while Foundation trainees and members shared their feelings about speaking in sign language, the Turkish Sign Language alphabet was also presented.

At the night, songs were performed in sign language, and plaques were presented to those who contributed to the project.
