21 Turkish Cypriots who were martyred in Tuzla village between 1956-1974 were commemorated with a ceremony held in Tuzla Martyrs’ Cemetery.
In the ceremony, which started with the laying of wreaths in accordance with the protocol, a moment of silence followed by a shot of respect was made, and flags were hoisted to the accompaniment of the National Anthem.
Afterwards, Zorlu Töre, President of the Assembly of the Republic, and Süleyman Uluçay, Mayor of Gazi Famagusta, made speeches at the ceremony.
Gazi Famagusta Mayor Süleyman Uluçay, in his speech, stated that Tuzla is an important part of Famagusta and commemorated those who were martyred in the village of Tuzla in the struggle for existence of the Turkish Cypriot people.
Drawing attention to what happened in the struggle for existence of the Turkish Cypriot people, Uluçay wanted those days to be well known by the youth and never be forgotten.
Emphasizing that the most important step to be successful in the face of difficulties is to act in unity and solidarity, Süleyman Uluçay reminded that the Turkish Cypriot people are a society that can manage to be in unity and solidarity when necessary, even though they have different thoughts and understanding, and stated that the best example of this was experienced in the earthquake that took place in Turkey.
Uluçay, who said that they experienced a very good example of unity and solidarity during the cleaning campaign that took place in the city recently, thanked those who contributed and stated that they are always ready to act in unity as a municipality.
Reminding that Uluçay Baykal Tunnel has a very important place in the struggle for existence, he also said that as a municipality, they are ready for the necessary steps for the opening of this tunnel.
In his speech at the ceremony, the Speaker of the Assembly of the Republic, Zorlu Töre, reminded that the Turkish Cypriot people have come to these days with great resistance, commemorating those who were martyred in Tuzla for this cause, and wished healthy lives to those who are still alive.
Emphasizing that the biggest summit reached by the Turkish Cypriot people is the realization of the 20th of July Peace and Freedom Day, Töre noted that freedom and independence are more important than anything else and that it is never possible to give up on them.
Stating that “Peace cannot be achieved in Cyprus by compromising on independence and giving up Turkey’s effective and de facto guarantees,” Zorlu Töre said, “If there is to be an agreement in Cyprus, it will be an agreement based on 2 equal sovereign states and Turkey’s effective and de facto guarantee will continue undiluted.”
