Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan said that they continue their initiatives for the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people, and they especially highlight the issues of direct flights to the TRNC and the start of direct trade.
Fidan presented the 2025 budget of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and related institutions at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Planning and Budget Commission.
Hakan Fidan underlined that Turkey remains committed to its goal of European Union membership and reminded that after 5 years, the European Union member states invited Turkey to the European Union (EU) Unofficial Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (Gymnich) held in Brussels.
Noting that the positive atmosphere at the meeting and the emphasis on Turkey’s strategic importance determined the agenda in the contacts with the EU senior officials and that the messages of improving relations were highlighted, Fidan said, “However, unfortunately, we see that short-term and inappropriate policies predominate on the European Union side. “In our contacts, we emphasize that our expectation from the EU is to adopt a future-oriented, inclusive and visionary attitude in our relations.” he said.

Fidan stated that the report prepared by Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, the Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Cyprus, after the contact with Turkey on the national cause Cyprus issue, revealed that there was no common ground between the parties.
Therefore, underlining that the fact that there are two separate peoples and two separate states on the Island of Cyprus has been confirmed once again, Fidan said, “We continue our initiatives for the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot people. “We highlight the issues of starting direct flights and direct trade with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and providing the TRNC leadership with the opportunity to contact their counterparts in third countries.” he said.
Fidan said that as a result of these efforts, TRNC’s participation in the Organization of Turkic States Summits at the highest level was ensured.
