Baykar’s Actions in Greece Cause Disruption, Prompts Special Investigation: Latest Update

The Italian aviation giant Piaggio Aerospace’s Turkish company Baykar is facing backlash from Greece due to the possibility of selling meteor-type missiles to Turkey. According to Greek newspaper Kathimerini, Athens has expressed its discomfort over the potential sale and is preparing to protest to Italy for lacking transparency in the matter.
The news reportedly stated that foreign investment companies from the European Union (EU) should be informed about such purchases, and Greece feels it was not consulted as a fellow EU member state. Athens is rumored to be filing a complaint with Italy over the issue.
During the EU Leaders Summit in Brussels on February 4, Greek Prime Minister Kiricotakis met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the sale of Meteor-type missiles to Turkey. While Athens continues to monitor the situation, it seems there is little they can do to prevent the sale.
Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias expressed his displeasure on January 29 to France’s Ambassador to Athens about the potential sale of the missiles to Turkey. The situation remains tense as Greece seeks clarity and transparency from Italy and Baykar about the controversial arms deal.
