Belgian Minister Prepares to Use Article 7 During Hungarian EU Presidency

Belgian Minister Criticizes Hungary for Failing to Implement Reforms

During a meeting in Luxembourg, Belgium’s Minister for Foreign and General Affairs, Hadja Lahbib, expressed regret that Hungary has not taken the necessary steps to implement reforms under Article 7 of the EU treaties. Lahbib, who currently holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, highlighted concerns over Hungary’s lack of respect for the rule of law, minority rights, and judicial independence. She called for a re-hearing for Hungary due to ongoing issues related to media freedom, academic freedom, freedom of association, and executive governance.

In a statement on Twitter, Lahbib emphasized that the Article 7 procedure has become a political issue in the context of the EU elections. She expressed hope that the discussion could become more objective and constructive after the elections. Furthermore, Lahbib referenced the situation in Poland, noting that the Article 7 procedure can be concluded quickly if there is the will to do so.

The European Commission’s Transparency and Values Commissioner, Vera Jourová, also weighed in on Hungary’s situation, stating that the EU will continue to monitor key areas under the Article 7 procedure. Jourová emphasized the importance of Hungary demonstrating its ability to act fairly and fulfill its duties during its upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Criticism of Hungary’s government has also come from other European political figures, with some pointing to the need for Hungary to adopt reforms in order to address concerns raised under the Article 7 procedure. The ongoing scrutiny of Hungary’s adherence to EU values underscores the importance of upholding democratic principles and the rule of law within the European Union.
