Belgian Minister Pushes for Hungary’s Exclusion from EU Decision-making
Brussels Faces Accusations of Silencing Pro-Peace Forces in Hungary
Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Péter Szijjártó, has accused Brussels of attempting to suppress pro-peace forces and pave the way for war by excluding Hungary from decision-making processes. Szijjártó’s statement came in response to a recent comment made by Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib, who suggested moving forward with the Article 7 rule of law procedure against Hungary, potentially stripping the country of its voting rights in the Council of the European Union.
“If we have the courage to make decisions, we must activate Article 7 to the end, which would eliminate Hungary’s right to veto,” Lahbib stated in an interview with Politico. In light of these remarks, Szijjártó warned that Brussels was in a state of “war-madness” and was attempting to silence voices of peace in the region.
With just days left until the European Parliament elections, Szijjártó emphasized the importance of ensuring that pro-peace voices were not silenced and that Hungary could express its position on critical issues. He called for strong support in the upcoming elections to resist pressure and advocate for peace in the face of escalating tensions.
Szijjártó also criticized Lahbib’s initiative to exclude Hungary from EU decision-making processes, highlighting the importance of representing Hungarian interests and opposing the threat of war. Despite facing opposition from the liberal mainstream in Brussels, Szijjártó affirmed that Hungary would continue to stand up for peace and take on the presidency of the Council of the European Union in the near future.
