Belgian Strike Forces Budapest Flight Cancellation, Wizz Air Routes Affected

A nationwide strike in Belgium has resulted in the cancellation of all flights to and from the country, impacting travel to Budapest as well. The strike, which began on February 13th, has brought air traffic to a halt, affecting major airlines and leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
According to AIRportal.hu, flights between Budapest and Brussels have been canceled, including Brussels Airlines flights SN2825 and SN2826. Passengers are advised to contact their airlines for rebooking options or refunds. Wizz Air flights, typically operating from Charleroi, are being redirected to Maastricht Aachen Airport in the Netherlands due to the closure of Belgian airspace.
The strike is part of protests against the Belgian government’s proposed pension reforms and public service cuts. Various aviation personnel, including air traffic controllers, security personnel, and ground handlers, are participating, leading to significant disruptions in the aviation sector. Brussels Airport has confirmed that no passenger flights will depart on February 13th, and incoming flights may also experience delays.
The airspace closure will last from 6:45 AM to 10:15 PM CET, affecting major airports in Belgium. Emergency flights are exempt, but all commercial flights below 7,500 meters are grounded. Passengers are advised not to go to the airport unless they have confirmed alternative travel arrangements.
In addition to the current disruptions, there are concerns about future rail strikes. Belgian trade unions have announced a five-day railway strike from February 23rd to 28th, which could further complicate travel in the region.
Airlines are working to rebook passengers on alternative flights or provide refunds. Brussels Airlines, for example, will automatically rebook affected passengers and offer free rebooking options via their app or customer service. Passengers are encouraged to stay updated with their airlines for the latest information and consider alternative travel options.
Travelers are advised to plan accordingly and monitor the situation closely for any updates or changes to travel arrangements.
