Berova meets with President of Azerbaijan Union of City Municipalities
Minister of Finance Özdemir Berova Hosts Presidents of Azerbaijani and Turkish Cypriot Municipalities
Minister of Finance Özdemir Berova welcomed the President of the Union of Azerbaijan City Municipalities, Tamraz Taghiyev, and the Mayor of Nerimanov, as well as the President of the Union of Turkish Cypriot Municipalities (KTBB), Mahmut Özçınar, at a reception held at the Ministry of Finance today. The visit was aimed at strengthening the ties between the municipalities of Azerbaijan and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
During the reception, Minister Berova emphasized the historical struggle of the Turkish people, stating that their perseverance has led to many victories. Highlighting the recent progress in TRNC-Azerbaijan relations and the growing influence of the TRNC within the Organization of Turkish States, Berova stressed the importance of a protocol to be signed between the municipal unions of the two countries.
Berova underlined the shared history and cultural ties between Turkey, TRNC, and Azerbaijan, referring to them as three integral parts of the same nation. He also touched upon the challenges faced by the Turkish Cypriot people until the establishment of the TRNC, drawing parallels with Azerbaijan’s struggles in the Karabakh region.
Furthermore, Minister Berova expressed solidarity with Azerbaijan over the Karabakh conflict, recounting his emotional response to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s announcement of the region’s liberation. He also shed light on the unjust embargoes imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people by the Greek Cypriots, affecting various aspects of daily life including direct flights and sports activities.
Mahmut Özçınar, the Mayor of Güzelyurt, announced plans to sign a cooperation protocol encompassing social, economic, and cultural initiatives between the Turkish Cypriot Municipalities Union and the Union of Azerbaijan City Municipalities. Emphasizing collaboration in the Turkic World and the European Council, Özçınar welcomed the Azerbaijani delegation’s official visit to TRNC and the upcoming protocol signing as crucial steps in fostering bilateral relations.
The reception showcased a shared commitment to strengthening ties between Azerbaijan and TRNC, underscoring the significance of mutual cooperation and exchange of experiences between the two countries’ municipal unions. The event marked a significant milestone in furthering the diplomatic and cultural relations between Azerbaijan and TRNC.
