BES launches “work stoppage” action – BRTK

Municipal Workers’ Union to Initiate Work Stoppage Actions Against the Government

The President of the Municipal Workers’ Union (BES), Mustafa Yalınkaya, has announced that the union will be undertaking “work stoppage” actions against the government starting from Monday.

In a written statement, Yalınkaya explained that the decision was made following an “extraordinary meeting” held by the BES Board of Directors, where they deemed the government’s attitude of “I know, I can do it, it will happen” towards the union’s ongoing struggle as unacceptable.

Yalınkaya further declared that the work stoppage will commence at the Nicosia Turkish Municipality (LTB) on Monday, with plans to extend the actions to other municipalities where the union is organized.

“If the bills are not withdrawn, we will take all kinds of radical decisions,” Yalınkaya warned, emphasizing the union’s readiness to pursue more drastic measures if the proposed amendments to the Collective Labor Agreement (TİS) and Cost of Living Allowance laws are not retracted by the government.

Addressing the government’s call for unions to discuss the laws in a parliamentary subcommittee, Yalınkaya asserted that the Municipal Workers’ Union, alongside other stakeholder unions, will be present at the Parliament to advocate for the withdrawal of the laws.

“We will keep the public informed of all decisions made based on the developments in the process,” Yalınkaya affirmed.

The work stoppage actions are set to commence on Monday, marking the union’s firm stance against the government’s proposed legislative changes impacting workers’ rights.
