Big Changes Coming to Budapest’s Nyugati Square

The iconic Nyugati Square in Budapest is about to undergo a major transformation, starting with the demolition of its overpass. This project, which includes the renovation of the Nyugati underpass, the addition of more green spaces, and the development of a cycling infrastructure, aims to revitalize the area and improve connectivity.

In addition to these changes, a new tram network called the “Pesti Fonódó” is in the works. The Budapest Transport Centre (BKK) has initiated a tender for the second phase of this project, which will link the city’s tram lines to create a more cohesive transportation system.

The upcoming construction of a 2.2-kilometre tram line between Deák Ferenc Square and Lehel Square will enhance connections between different parts of Budapest. The removal of the Nyugati Square overpass will allow for the integration of tram and trolleybus services along the route.

The entire project is scheduled for completion by December 31, 2027, with the option for additional renovations to the Nyugati underpass and Szabadság Bridge. These developments promise to transform Nyugati Square into a more vibrant and accessible hub for locals and visitors alike.
