Bitlis Bans Demonstration Marches for 10 Days
Hakkari Mayor’s Detention Sparks Protests in Bitlis
Following the detention of Hakkari Mayor Mehmet Sıddık Nakit, social media posts calling for protests and vigils have been circulating, leading authorities to take action. The Governorship of Bitlis has announced restrictions on demonstrations and gatherings in light of these calls for protest.
According to the statement released by the Governorship, it is believed that protests will be held in Bitlis in response to Mayor Nakit’s detention. As a result, a ban has been placed on demonstration marches, public meetings, and indoor gatherings within Bitlis for the next 10 days, starting from today until June 12.
The Governorship emphasized that any activities deemed inappropriate by the authorities will not be allowed, in accordance with the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations. This includes setting up tents, distributing flyers, organizing campaigns, and any other forms of protest that may disrupt public order.
Additionally, entry to and exit from Bitlis and its districts will be restricted during this period to prevent individuals from participating in illegal activities related to the protests.
The Governorship’s statement serves as a warning to those who plan to engage in protests in response to Mayor Nakit’s detention, urging them to abide by the regulations set forth by the authorities. As tensions continue to rise, it is essential for both the protestors and law enforcement to prioritize peace and avoid any actions that may lead to further unrest.
