Bonaire Defends Cultural and Religious Values Against Dutch Colonial Pressure
A strong stance against the policies imposed by the Netherlands was taken by the Secretary of Pueblo Progresivo Uni in Bonaire, Robert Strickx, during the international conference “Colonialism: Erasing National and Religious Identity.” Strickx highlighted the threat posed by these measures to the religious and cultural values of Bonaire, emphasizing the infringement on fundamental human rights and the increase in colonial pressure.
With approximately 80 percent of the population in Bonaire practicing Christianity, the local culture is deeply rooted in these religious values. However, the laws enforced by Dutch authorities are in direct conflict with the traditional beliefs and customs of the island, as noted by Strickx.
Despite facing this colonial pressure, Strickx affirmed that the people of Bonaire are committed to defending their culture, religious beliefs, and right to self-determination. “We will continue to fight for our right to live according to our customs and traditions, using all available resources to achieve this goal,” stated the representative of Bonaire.
It is evident that the community in Bonaire is unwavering in their resolve to preserve their unique cultural and religious identity in the face of external influences that seek to erode these values.
