Borrell: Gaza’s People Fighting for Survival

Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, recently addressed the United Nations Security Council on the ongoing crisis in Gaza. Speaking at the session on UN-EU cooperation, Borrell highlighted the alarming situation in the world and called out countries for disregarding the UN Charter without consequences.
Borrell emphasized the long-standing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, pointing to Gaza as a clear example of the grave humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region. He stressed the need for Israel’s right to self-defense to be exercised within the framework of international law and humanitarian principles.
The High Representative expressed concern over the high number of casualties and displaced individuals in Gaza, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian aid to reach the region. Borrell condemned the man-made hunger crisis in Gaza, drawing parallels between the situation in Ukraine and the suffering of the Palestinian people.
Borrell also spoke in support of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), highlighting its crucial role in providing assistance to the people of Gaza. He urged Israel to acknowledge the necessity of UNRWA for Palestinian refugees and emphasized the importance of implementing a two-state solution for lasting peace in the region.
In conclusion, Borrell called for decisive action by the United Nations Security Council to support the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel, based on principles of separation, security, and mutual cooperation. He emphasized the need to turn principles into tangible efforts to address the ongoing crisis in Gaza and work towards a sustainable solution for all parties involved.
