Breakthrough Gene Editing Technique Shields Barley from Diseases

A new gene editing procedure developed by the National Laboratory of Agricultural Biotechnology and Precision Breeding for Food Security’s working group on cereal grain research is set to revolutionize the production of economically useful cereal varieties. According to the institute, the development focuses on creating high-yielding and pathogen-resistant cereal varieties to improve the quantity and quality of food.

The research has led to the patenting of new methods and their practical application, resulting in the nomination of a resistant barley variety for state recognition. This variety has been specifically designed to combat the spread of barley net blotch, a fungal disease that is increasingly prevalent in Europe.

The Agricultural Biotechnology and Precision Breeding for Food Security consortium, which includes the HUN-REN Center for Agricultural Research, the HUN-REN Szeged Biological Research Center, and the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences (MATE), aims to promote healthy food production and address the challenges posed by the climate crisis and environmental pressures through a holistic One Health approach.

Funded by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office, the consortium’s project is expected to conclude in 2026 with HUF 2,431 billion (approximately EUR 6 billion) in non-reimbursable funding. This substantial investment will support the development of innovative solutions for sustainable agriculture and food security.

In addition to their groundbreaking research, the consortium is also exploring the potential of artificial intelligence in agriculture to optimize processes, save time, and reduce costs. By harnessing advanced technologies and cutting-edge research, the Agricultural Biotechnology and Precision Breeding for Food Security consortium is at the forefront of innovation in the agricultural sector.
