Breathtaking Photos: Restoring Buda Castle Palace for Accessibility

The Buda Castle Palace, a symbol of Hungary’s rich history and architectural heritage, is set to undergo a magnificent transformation thanks to the National Hauszmann Programme. The programme aims to restore the palace to its original glory, reconstruct most of its interior, and make parts of the building accessible to the public once again.

Designed by Alajos Hauszmann in the neo-Baroque-Art Nouveau style, the Buda Castle Palace was completed at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Its ornate exterior and interior made it one of the most magnificent royal residences in Europe. However, during World War II, the palace suffered extensive damage and was rebuilt in a simplified form in the following decades.

Now, with the help of the National Hauszmann Programme, the palace is set to be restored to its former grandeur. The enfilade, a series of interconnecting halls on the first floor, will be revived, allowing visitors to explore the palace’s historical and sacred spaces once again. In addition to the restored areas, the palace will also offer a range of attractions, including temporary exhibitions, art galleries, cafés, gift shops, and educational spaces.

The reconstruction work is already underway, with the south wing on Szent György Square opened in August 2021. Future plans include the reconstruction of the north wing, the Ballroom Wing, the Dome Wing, the Baroque Wing, and the South Wing. The Palace’s education center will be housed in the South Wing, while the wing in Krisztinaváros will be the final piece of the historic renovation puzzle.

Overall, the restoration of the Buda Castle Palace is a testament to Hungary’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and ensuring that future generations can appreciate the beauty and significance of this historic landmark.
